Under the direction of CEO Eve McEneaney, Fox Cultural Hall was founded to increase the access and exposure to the arts for all in in North Lake Tahoe. Fox Cultural Hall is a 501 c(3) non-profit that works to provide community and school-based art programs. Founded in 1984 under the name Arts For The Schools by Terry Yagura, the organization originally sought to address a decline in arts education by providing cultural and artistic programming for rural schools. Today Fox Cultural Hall serves dozens of communities in our service area, spanning two states, four counties and reaches 25 schools in California and Nevada.
The journey to opening Fox Cultural Hall was a long one, beginning in 2018 with an idea and a team meeting. CEO McEneaney held a team member discussion asking for input on the barriers to operating arts programming. The resounding answer was a permanent home. The request was put out to begin to search for any old building that we could convert into a cultural and performance hall. As luck would have it, one of our team members lived in Dollar Hill, and drove by the old Kings Beach movie theater, snapping a photo of the phone number on the for-sale sign. The dream was born.
In 2019 the first set of architectural plans were drawn and many drafts of a pro-forma business plan. The rest, is a long story of struggles including COVID-19 supply-chain delays, construction permit delays, and sweat and tears. It absolutely could not have been accomplished without the critical support of the McEneaney family (Adeline, Henry, Brian and Eve), McEneaney Construction, Truckee-Tahoe Lumber, Laird Norton Family Foundation, MWA Architecture, Matt Lee Construction, and Tahoe Mountain Resorts Foundation. Our doors opened in January to the first community events, with full programming beginning in March 2023.
